Country Smells and Sounds…

Late this evening the dogs and I walked down to the sheep pens.  The sky was incredible! Over the mountain behind Grandma’s was the most unusual color of orange in the clouds. It was a pinkish, purple, and orange. And it seemed to glow like it was being lit with a light from behind the color. The clouds were dark blueish grey and big. As the sun went down the sky was pinkish purple behind the mountain above my Mother’s house, and all this beauty lasted for an hour at least! Breath taking!  I do not believe I have ever observed this sky before!

The dogs and I waked through the growing,  green, tall fescue grass that will soon be hay for the coming winter. The grass smelled so good it was a sweet like smell, and I listened to the tall grass whisper against my pants leg wisp, wisp, swish, wisp ever so lightly. The wind was finally still after all the blowing and gusting of the last 48 hours.

The crickets were singing their songs of joy. The bull frogs on the pond talking to each other in that distinct deep throaty voice.  Ocassionally a song bird would sing a short verse of “Glory!”

Then there it was that unmistakable sound of the the whippoorwill! Real close too! Have you ever seen this nocturnal bird? He is not pretty! I believe he is called a night hawk .  He has a large wide thick looking wing span. Prefers the ground to a tree and flies but is very stubby and clumsy looking. This whippoorwill had a very deep voice strong and clear!

There was the sweet scent of freshly mown grass in the distance, mixed with White Ash blooms. And that woods smell!

The dogs they smelled like pond water and fur and well dogs!

What a glorious evening!
