Well I finished the Fall bush hogging!!! I mowed 8 acres today with my neighbor’s tractor and bush hog.
Our fields are hilly and scary!!!! I remember as a child being very much afraid of the tractor and being in the very same fields as I mowed today….I was not afraid today. Careful yes! Cautious for sure! Slow even! But not afraid!!!
Mowing brings back so many memories… As I rode along I thought of Grandpa and how he smelt when he came in for dinner (lunch) from his mowing in the fields. He wore bib overalls (bet that does not surprise any body!) . He smelled of diesel fuel and fresh mowed grass. He was never sunburned hardly… he wore a cap. and long sleeves mostly…carried a water jug on the tractor with fresh hand drawn well water and ice cubes out of a metal ice tray…
I thought of all the hay that had been cut off the fields I was mowing and all the fun we had getting it up. Of the long ride back to the barn to put it up in and how I all ways had the job of driving the tractor and getting the men folk water!
Seems I could never choose the right row or hear the directions I was given over the tractor! I laugh at that now! How sweet it would be to hear that again!
Well, I have a plan to get my fields back in shape like they use to be some 20 years ago…I will keep them mowed, lime them and put my sheep on them (fertilization) and see what happens.. In a few years I should be weed free and have lush grass for hay again! As well as good pasture. Grandpa would be pleased…
I looked across the fields and hills that I had mowed and saw how good it was and I felt such a peace and satisfaction . Yes I suppose this farming is in my blood too!
I had to stop and move fence so I could get some areas that had been worked on in the spring. I went to the house and the dogs came back with me. They are not allowed in the field when I am on the tractor. Too dangerous!
So when I came back with the tractor (all the dogs were suppose to be at the house where I left them) On my second round I saw her! There sat Montanna on the next hill way away but had me in sight and there she sat till I finished mowing after dark! Then she came along beside me to the house….
Now it is raining… and the cool season grass will have a chance to grow more before winter!
