Crossing Cedar Run…

This is Peppy, Montanna and Boobie Dog on the Creek Trail at my house. The creek is Cedar Run…It can be quite a stream when there has been lots of rain…This was in the fall several years ago. This is one of my most favorite rides and “Memory “….

I was down at Ken Treadways looking for good lesson horses. I saw the most beautiful Quarter Horse with 4 white stockings  and a blaze face plus a flax mane and tail! And he was a Gelding!!! I fell in love right then and there! He was older Ken said…I did not even look in his mouth…He rode like a dream! He was PERFECT! Not to big and stocky built! (One of my students in an Open Horse Show beat a horse in a Conformation class that had AQHA points) with Peppy… He was a nice nice horse! and a flashy looker!

I know there has to be “something ” wrong with him right?  Well,,, ONE should look in a horses mouth! No matter what!

Peppy ( I named him) and it suited him… He was tough and strong and could go all day. LOVED a COW!  In fact he was down right aggravating about being in a cow pasture! He wanted to work cows!  In the worst way! But he was good! If you rode with tight reins that meant to him to get up on the bit and GO! So a loose rein meant take it easy. Now most people ride with a tight rein. They think it gives them more control. The faster the horse goes the tighter the reins. Well if you wanted to bounce all day and be tired that was fine! (I have lots of funny stories about folk ridding Peppy. ) I will share latter.

Peppy’s Lesson to me! Look in the horses mouth no matter what!

Seems Ole Peppy (own son of War Bonnet Leo) was OLD ! Like really OLD! Like no teeth old! Oh, he had front teeth LONG ones! But the rest were level with his gums!

He was fat when I brought him home but quickly became a problem to keep weight on. I ended up feeding him a total mash (5 gallons) Twice a day! He was expensive to keep! He ate in one week as much as 6 horses did!

I had Peppy 2 years and loved riding him and having him every minute! He was a wonderful horse! But too expensive to feed him! He was 31 years old when I rehomed him! He went to a retirement place for horses. Still strong as he was at 10 years of age! I miss him !
