This was my special horse “Bo”
we were crossing a creek on the Lewis Fork Trail at Mt Rogers NRA in VA. (Boobie Dog is in the creek headed to the small waterfall!)
“BO”
Bo was out of Ole King (Delk’s King Star) and a Charlie Polite mare my Grandpa purchased out in Tyler Texas in the 70’s…Grandpa owned that mare for 12 years and never knew she was broke to anything but a halter!
One day Grandpa had Les to see if she would ride. And boy did she! She was one broke horse and a sure enough good one! Guess the apple did not fall far from that tree!
We purchased BO when he was 13 from the man that had sought him as a 2 year old from my Grandpa. Bo was broke and had only been ridden 10 times when he came to us. Les rode him for 6 months and then I started riding him and I fell in love!
What a fine ride he was and a sweet horse. He and I bonded! I rode him everywhere! You pointed his head and he took you not a question nor a stumble and he was a fast walker! I like to say he could walk faster than I could think. And he did! I would think now which way and we were through it or round it or over it before I had more than thought!
At 22 Bo went blind and Ken Treadway found him a home in SC with a family that had an old mare that Bo took up with and he lived out the rest of his life there.
The thing is here he was nervous and scared and was starting to colic because of his blindness. But when he left here he was off his game and was willing to adapt to the new situation he was in, but here he would have died.
It broke my heart to let him go, but it was best for him…It still breaks my heart…
But my what a fine ride he was and what great fun we had together! Yes a fine ride!
I have many tales of our times together but I will save them for another day!
Bo is the horse the others are judged by!
