Clay my neighbor, friend, potter and wood cutter has hurt his back… I sure hope and pray it heals soon… Back pain is no fun!
So we needed a new source of wood for my wood stove. (Les works and does not have time and his back is troubling him as well) Saturday Les and I went about 5 miles from the house and there was an older man with a wood lot. He cuts and splits the wood (it is all nice dry wood) and then sells it for $45.00 for a stacked pickup load! Most reasonable! And Near!
So we purchased a load and brought it home. I have been feeling bad with a cold…so the wood has sat since Saturday at my back door and porch waiting to be un loaded and stacked.
It is quite warm this afternoon 77 degress and the sun is shinning.
As I started unloading and stacking the wood. I remembered the old saying “wood warms you twice!” Most definately today!
As I stacked the wood my old ghosts visited me in the form of my memory…
I could hear Grandpa and Grandma talking as we all cut and stacked wood… their laughter soft on the breeze…The saw running…The smell of the wood and the memories of Grandma haveing dinner ready when Pap and I finished our stacking. Of wood smoke and cold mornings made warm by the wood stove on their porch. and the watter kettle singing it’s happy song. Oh and that wonderful smell of parched peanuts on the wood stove…Ah….
What a Simple Country Pleasure stacking wood is…
