Saturday afternoon BOO and I took off for the Virginia Mountains! If you are traveling up HWY 52 North above Piolt Mountain State Park and look off to the Northeast that is where we went! Claudville Virgina! Cox Ridge Road to be exact!
As we left the (future Interstate highway what’s up with that designation?) We were very quickly into the country. On winding narrow up and down and around roads! As we traveled north east towards our destination, the ice that had fallen the day before was everywhere!
The closer to Cox Ridge Road we got the higher the elevation and the ponds were frozen over but not the creeks! It looked as if there should be people skating on the ponds!
We snaked our way along and had to backtrack once! (No GPS for ME)!!! I will quit driving when I need one of those things! (I can read a map!) Honestly if you need satellite it would not have worked! My cell phone didn’t! Around every curve there was a wonderful surprise! Beautiful old homes, new ones too! Old home places, old barns and tobacco barns dotted the countryside. Cows and horses on hills. The little settlement of Westfield. Beautiful old churches. Old grave yards …
We visited Pat and Ed Justus and BOO was bred to Skye! I returned the bowl she had lent me back in December and we were back on the same old road again. We could not stay because of the weather and the roads were wet and would be frozen over shortly!
The trip back to the interstate seemed faster!
As we got close to Pilot Mountain (the town) Literally I had my breath taken by the view I saw!
All of a sudden rising out of no where there it was… this beautiful, huge, lone, majestic, purple mountain ! To the left of the mountain but attached to it was a dip and then a round rock formation rising up. I could see the rock! It was awesome! and it was taller than the mountain but kinda like a cap on a mushroom…The sky looked like lavender colored cotton balls all around above and behind it. The sun had set and it was that magical time of evening that I love the best. I wish I had my camera but even a photo would not have done it justice! As I drove towards Pilot Mountain I drank in the beauty of it all! It was magical.
I never ever fail to be amazed by these beautiful old mountains. Like my good friend Jr. Cox….I just love these old mountains, I do not know why. But I do!
