Last Evening…

It was cold and grey as the sun sank low in the sky and the weather matched my mood…Everywhere I looked the grass was grey brown and crispy dead, it seemed. The sky was that dark winter grey the trees stood stark and still lifeless against it.

Drover and I finished our chores as the wind picked up it was fairly miserable out side and I thought I could hardly wait to walk back to the house and the warm fire that waited  for me.

As we started up the hill from the sheep pens …I caught my breath ! Ah! oh my!  SIX grey deer very much alive and happy to be so bounded out of the grey woods towards us! They jumped and bounced and looked and snorted and ran with such abandonment and joy!  What a gift! Their heads high in the air and their nostrils flaring at every scent on the cold breeze. We were down wind and went unnoticed by the deer as they jumped first one fence crossing the driveway and then on to the horses pasture and that electric fence! Happily their tails all white and bushy bounced along and then all of a sudden we were noticed! Then feared and AWAY! AWAY they flew! Like birds with wings ! And then they were gone out of sight!

As was my mood!
