Early I went to the barn to turn the sheep out. The puppies were screaming ” US US US FIRST!” I ignored them and went round to the barn. Opened each stall and sheep flowed out into the early morning coolness and lovely wet, green, lush grass. As the last ewe walked out there stood a small just born lamb. And NO MOMMA!!!!! This is getting old fast! I walked out to where the ewes were and sure enough there was a ewe that showed she had just lambed. At least I knew WHICH one it was! So I carried the baby out and they bonded and all was good!
Les and I worked on Momma’s house and could hear off and on all day much fussing from the ewes. I figured they were sorting all the lambs out as they grazed and did not worry.
When they all came up about dusk the ewes were fussier than usual. I did a head count and all the ewes were present! GOOD! UH What about the LAMBS?!!! MISSING TWO of the 19!!!! SO THAT is what the problem is!
I called Drover to go down in the field in the tall thick grass (we are ready to cut hay) and Timber and one of the puppies went along as well as Abilene. We searched and sure enough the first lamb was easy to find! Laying in the tall grass! Not saying a thing! Les took it to the barn and its Mom!
I told Drover to find the other lamb! He looked all over! He was searching! The puppy was with me! And Timber and Abilene were looking too! Drover found it about 10 feet in the chest high grass from where we found the other lamb! Neither Lamb had made a sound or a move!
All ended well! The one lamb was weak. The one born this morning! I should have put it up with its Mother like I normally do new borns but I thought it all would be okay.
I gave it some Karo Syrup tonight to stimulate it and hopefully it will help!
This afternoon my first of !0 puppies left for her new home in South Carolina! Amelia B. Picked up a bob tailed female and has named her Maggie! I LIKE that name! Fit that puppy to a T! Photos to follow soon!
Maggie will have horses and lots of room to be a good English Shepherd puppy in! It was sad and difficult to see my first puppy leave. I miss her! But I know she will have a wonderful, happy life! That is as it should be! and I will hear about her and get to see her again! That is good!
Sheep are quiet and Puppies are asleep! Sleep well my little Maggie in your new home! Dream your sweet dreams and be all you were meant to be!
