This morning Ernie and Artie came by…Ernie finished the bush hogging (fields look great! yes we lost the hay to rain)What a wonderful friend and helper Ernie is! (Artie too smile)
We worked the new Churro sheep from the outside of the arena with Drover and Artie and the sheep settled quickly …Will not be long before they are useable…
So Ernie and Artie decide to do a walk about with the Katahdin sheep on our property. They set out across the dam to find the flock. The flock was on my Uncle’s land and it is 7 feet high in Johnson Grass! Some of the sheep were up the mountain in the cut over from 3 years ago!
I had to send Drover for this job. Drover had his work cut out for him! He gathered the main flock on my command and brought them to Ernie and Artie so they could do walk about .Then Drover and I went in search for the others. He found them and got them to the larger flock.
On the way to my Uncles land Drover had said there was a sheep in the trees. I did not see it and thought he must be wrong. He insisted but I would not listen …we had worse troubles. ( I could hear the Gator running and figured my uncle was on his way…So….On Ernie’s way back he saw the lamb! Got it and brought it up to our gator on the dam. It was weak and hot and WORMY! Really! I will be lucky to have any sheep survive this attack of worms!
I went to the house got medicine and wormer. Did I mention it was miserable dangerous hot and humid today? Well Ernie got way to hot …and I had to leave Drover with the flock (I left him in a down stay) while I took Ernie to the house on the gator.
I was uneasy because I left on the gator and was gone a good 15 minutes. When I got back the flock was being held by my Shepherd Dog Drover (who had found some shade and a cool place) ALL was well! I doctored sheep in the field as my dog held them (no fences) and tonight the sheep were okay! Drover is making a real working dog! He is my right hand !
