This evening Drover and I had to put the sheep in the barn because of the wind and our single digit temps…I parked the truck so to block the sheep from circling the barn (the Churrios have never been in the barn) Dover drove the sheep to the barn and I went round the other side and figured I could block the 3 foot wide opening that they could not readily see. Okay not my brightest moment (knowing sheep)…Instead of the sheep going in the barn they came to me! and saw daylight and a hole with green grass. I did fairly well for a few seconds then it happened! I was in the 3 foot opening and 37 sheep came thru it! I rolled on top and down thru and finally on my knees! I came up… madder than a wet setting hen! Sigh…The sheep went to the grass and I sent Drover and I walked over to the stall door. He brought everyone of the sheep right back thru that hole and put them in the stall like I wanted!
What a fine Job! (he was pretty mad too )
Lessons Learned:
1. Don’t stand in the way of a flock of sheep you cannot hold them without a dog!
2. TRUST YOUR DOG! He can and will do the job! When oh when will I ever “Get this”?
3. From Mary Peaslee today part of a poem she found in an old book…
“But I didn’t know what misery was
Till I started herding sheep.” ”
Amen ! so true!
of ESs and Herding Sheep
Herding is not a gentle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a game of solitaire.
It is a Grand Passion. It seizes a person whole and , once it has done so …One is never the same!
