This evening the sun had set as Drover and I walked across the dam to get the sheep up.
The wind was blowing but it was not too cold. The air was fresh and clean after the rain. There was a mist in the air and the mountain was grey and misty. Mysterious looking. The pond was glass still. The wild ducks were swimming happily on the pond.
There was still color in the trees some yellow and golds and reds.
I could hear the bells in the distance and as I opened the gate the chain clanged against the metal gate making its own music. The birds were singing (we have had a bath!) The grass was wet and green and smelled wonderful !
I sent Drover on an outrun and he brought the sheep up the hill to me and then drove them on through the gate and across the dam to the gate in front of the house. I shut the gate and had Drover do a down a couple of times. As I caught up. I had not opened the gate in front of the house. I knew the sheep would drift on past the gate and they did. So I sent Drover on an Away, as I opened the gate he brought the sheep into the field. Quietly and nice.
Tuff had took a walk about and I had him in the field so I took the sheep with Drover’s help down to the Arena…I remembered how I had first seen Kathy Hartley take sheep across this same field several years ago and I had wished that I could do that same thing! Well SMILE ! I can now! And I did not watch my dog but watched my sheep and gave my dog directions from what the sheep were doing!
Drover and I finished our evening chores and walked back up to the house for supper! Both happy and content.
What a fine feeling to have a good dog and be out in a beautiful, cool, crisp, wet evening….Truly a Simple Country Pleasure!
