Life has many twists and turns…like a country road…they were all ways built to go by everyone’s house. Then other houses thru the years were built up along the twisting country roads. I smile as I remember my Sweet Mama saying about one such twisting curvy road…”the man that built that road ( Crouse Town Road in Davidson County) must have sat down and cried when he finished it! ” I asked “why” and she said ” because he could not build any more curves!”
This past Thursday I baked a pound cake with our home grown chicken eggs and took it to my friends Lawana and Stacey Manning at Buffalo Creek Dairy. I had promised them a pound cake a while back.
The day was wonderfully cool and sun shinning. The air smelled clean and fresh. I had no idea what a treat I was in for.
Lawana and I followed Stacey over to a field he was tending to deliver him some things he needed. The countryside up in Stokes County is gorgeous. Beautiful old homes, fields with corn and grain growing…Sauratown Mountains off in the distance. Blue skies with fluffy white clouds and the smell of fresh mowed grass completed the setting of our outing.
We went thru or near places called Rural Hall, Germanton, Salem, King, Bethania, Walnut Cove, and Pine Hall…
One of the delights of my trip was the stop at the local King Southern States to pick up the mineral licks for the sheep. (the reason I was up there actually) …I have to say I have never been to a more pleasant place to shop. I was treated like I was a valued customer of long standing. All the sales people were exceptionally knowledgeable and polite. It was a wonderful experience!
During our wanderings we had the windows rolled down and our conversation was most pleasant! We conversed about the weather, and all the rain, crops, dogs, cows, sheep, horses, Alaska, pound cake, hay, and going junking. The local history, the mountains, growing up in the country…parents, life and living!
We arrived back at the dairy and Lawana had something she wanted me to see up at the house. It was a photo from the night she and Stacey met! Lawana looked like a little girl and Stacey looked like Stacey!
Lawana had the most beautiful delicious local strawberries! She asked if I would like to have them! I have learned to say yes 🙂 they were all mine! (I did feel a bit guilty!) but they came home with me and I made 26 jars of jam and 9 packs of frozen strawberries!
Ah…..
It was a most pleasant afternoon! Filled with excitement . adventure and peaceful fun! A real treasure! One of the days you remember because of the good company, beautiful scenery, weather…and the peace and goodness felt…and lived…
A true “Country Treasure”
