This evening at dusk I walked down to check on my ewes. The air was damp and heavy with wood smoke. Cool but not cold. I thought about the Shepherds of long ago…Out on the Judean countryside taking care of their flocks. Timber, Drover, Montanna and Amarillo walked along with me. We checked the water. Tuff was off in the distance grazing quietly, lifted his head and went back to his grazing. The sheep watched quietly as we all approached the fenced area they were in.
The evening was still and but for the bells and a quiet baa baa…It was very quiet. The dogs sat quietly as asked at a distance and waited as I opened the gate for the sheep to come out into the big field. I thought of sheep and shepherds and their dogs…Of that special relationship that has been formed and bred for for thousands of years. Of the simple quiet life difficult at best but good honest life lived by shepherds ….most likely poor but rewarding. After all look at the breeds of dogs they have produced from their work and effort to help them take care of the flocks …
I asked Drover to move up so the sheep would come out and he very quietly did the job. As I closed the gate …I could hear the old Christmas song “While Shepherd’s Watched Their Flocks By Night!” My heart sang with joy!
Les and I have supplied 4 Maple Grove Farm Sheep for a local Live Nativity Scene …If you are close by please come out and enjoy the Christmas season!

It looks like a very large production and I think it will be enjoyable!
