My Grandpa Delk was a fine farmer, and his father before him…In the 40’s, 50’s early 60’s there was a program to help farmers keep their land from eroding (washing away) with heavy rains.
I arrived home about an hour ago in a heavy down pour. The ditches were all ready full…and the terraces were filling in the field in front of our home. Seems those old terraces if kept clear, and not allowed to burst… still do the job originally intended!
We live on the side of a mountain (800 feet above elevation) and the land would have long since washed away if we did not have Grandpa’s terraces.
Plus the terraces help with irrigation …We all ways have green grass that grows even if there is a bad drought.
I watch from my desk as the rain comes freely down…Marvel at the wet, warm, grey evening, and the water in our terraces.
Thank you Grandpa and others wise like you! And thank you for teaching me your ways all these years!
