The recent hurricane and flooding in its aftermath have set me to thinking…
Just a few minutes ago I had a piece of toasted cheese toast. It was delicious… as I shut the refrigerator door I thought look at all the food ! How and where does it come from? Wal Mart? Food Lion? Audi?
I have Borden’s Cheese Melts, Block Cheese, Grated Cheese, Cream Cheese, Parmesan Cheese, whipped cream cheese, sliced cheese…
Milk.
Butter, margarine, eggs, bacon, sausage, flour for pancakes and biscuits. Canned biscuits, frozen biscuits, frozen pastry, loaf bread.
Orange Juice, crangrape juice.
In the freezer strawberries, peaches, corn, hamburger meat, stew beef, chicken.
I have celery, tomatoes, grapes, lettuce, onions, potatoes, green pepper, lemons, potatoes.
Mayonnaise, mustard, catsup, pickles, jelly (some home made) 🙂 , all kinds of relishes and salad dressings.
Sigh…
how did that food come to be in my refrigerator?
All the dairy products came from hard working dairy farmers on the job, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Oh and twice a day milking cows. Just an FYI… the small dairy farmers are having a tough time. Many are going out of business. Not because of poor management of resources or lack of working…
The farmers that grow fresh vegetables ( as many as possible) are locally grown the rest from farms all over the country, and yes even some foreign countries.
A farmer watched the weather, planned, prepared the soil, waited, planted tended, harvested and now that food is in my refrigerator. What about yours?
I think also on the times that same Farmer had floods, drought, wind, hail, or it was too cold , too hot, then there is frost!
The food we have to eat is grown by less than 2 percent of the population. WOW! Now that is a sobering thought! 325.7 MILLION people are fed by a very few!
And if that was not enough…Below are some very sobering statistics to think about!
I have copied some facts from 2011…I think you will find them interesting. (https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/which-are-the-biggest-industries-in-the-united-states.html)
