FALL….Grandma…a tear or two and a sweet smile, love and missing her in my heart….
A life well lived in her 90 plus years in Jackson Creek, where she was born, raised, married at 16, to the love of her life Astor J. Delk. She bore him 4 strong hardy boys :Alton, Dempsey, Henry Leaton, and Richard all in 10 years time. They raised those 4 boys on the farm….It was a hard time , but a good honest life.
Grandma was not fancy in the ways of the world.
She loved her flowers like her Momma before her and her vegetable garden.
She learned to cook like my Great Grandma Delk (Elsie Skeen) and Great Grandma Nance (her mother) .
Fall was Grandma’s favorite time of the year. She loved to take a trip to the mountains for apples and cabbage. Apples meant pies, and cabbage meant chow chow!
This evening Fall is in the air for the first time….more of a smell and a feeling than anything else. (Like a promise on the light breeze) It is cool…
A friend wondered out loud “Where did I learn to cook?” I said “I am Lyde Delk’s Granddaughter!” ( She was the best cook in Jackson Creek! The county! Why the whole wide world I Bet!) Not fancy! But she could fill you up with something made out of seemingly Nothing! In 30 minutes flat! And it was delicious to boot!
Oh Yes I miss her! Bad! I still keep wanting to pick the phone up and call her !
She has been gone to heaven for 13 months now……
