We held a clinic here at our farm..for herding dogs and their owners.
I rented a flock of sheep and they arrived in a small horse trailer. The field was too wet and hilly for the person delivering the sheep to drive to the pens and arena. So they unloaded the flock of 15 sheep in my driveway. NO FENCES! They took their Border Collie and walked down to the pen area and the sheep walked with them as the Border Collie kept the sheep with the “shepherd” …….
To say that I was amazed and impressed is an understatement! I could not believe it! NO FENCES!!!!!!!!!!! Grandpa all ways had fences!!!!! I thought it was like the end of the world to be without a fence!!!!
I stood there on the hill and watched holding my breath and as I watched I thought “Oh I wish I could do that!” and at the time thought maybe one day! How cool it would be! How exciting! How wonderful to be able to do that! ONE DAY!
NOW !!!! I do it EVERYDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I remembered what I thought (four years ago) this morning as all of my dogs ( English Shepherds) worked with me and my sheep to take them down to the field where they spend the day grazing freely on 15 acres of grass. As I watched BOO (yes BOO !) take the sheep down and the other dogs help and mind and do as I told them….Stay, easy, wait, that will do, good dogs!!!!! and I shut the gate! No stress on the sheep or the dogs and it makes for a nice morning walk!!!
I do have a fence along my driveway to keep them out of the road. But there is only openness on either end!
Guess my dream came true! Yours can too no matter what it is!!!!
