The Smell of Fresh Milk…

As a young child I think my first memory of milking cows was at age three.

I vividly remember the cows coming into the dairy milking parlor…feeding the sweet smelling feed (my job) and the sound of the milking machines milking. Of Grandma and Grandpa talking, the radio playing a local station in Asheboro, (very country) gospel music, country and Elvis!

Smells are strong triggers to the memory. At least to mine…

Tonight I had to milk one of my Ewes, she has way too much milk for one lamb. Her udder was getting hot and red and tight. So for the next few days we will milk her and I will cut her feed down (maybe out)!

Anyway, it has been many years since I was around fresh milk. As I sat on my stool and milked #47 with her lamb beside her, I could smell the milk. It has a sweet, sticky, milk smell!!! I can’t explain this one. I can still smell it even now. I was not all ways hitting the pan I was milking in! My fingers tired rather quickly! And I was not very good at first! But I soon got in the rhythm and squirt,  squirt, squirt! Into the metal pan the thick rich smelling Ewe’s milk went!

I gave the milk to the dogs! They LOVED it! Abilene , BOO, and Drover! Montanna and Amarillo did not realize the treat they missed!

But my what memories that smell of milk brought back to me!

You know, I love that smell, like I love the smell of Vanilla flavoring! Only better! And harder to come by!
