This afternoon Durango (now DEANO) went to Margaret Proctors to further his “Puppy Education”!!! He is a great Farm Dog and has been working quite well with Drover. Plus he has made every step I have fencing and such. Plus he is a great ratter, vermin hunter…
But two puppies at the same time the same age and from the same litter are at best very difficult to handle at this age plus they tend to take up with each other or the grown dogs.
So…since Durango (now Deano) does not have a permanent home yet. It was decided because “Aunt” Margaret so graciously offered …To keep him for the next month or so and she would teach him the ways of a well mannered puppy, that would be able to fit in anywhere he might go.
What that means is: he will be house broken (will ring the bell to be let out) wipe his feet when he comes inside, Socialized in a more city setting. As I have done the country socialization. He will be polite and learn house manners! None of this I can teach because he lives out side on the farm. (and there are two puppies here!) Stetson leaves for his forever home the 1st of September. Now I have time to teach Stetson more things as well.
Durango (Deano) we changed his name to something easier to say…Knows fairly good…Sit, stay, heels without a leash, does not jump on me, and in general minds fairly well. I expect Margaret to have some “moments” with the chickens, as he is fairly rough of late on the ducks.
Diane and Richard Swift Margaret and myself went out to dinner at the best Mexican Restaurant located downtown Apex! The food was wonderful and the company Excellent! We had a wonderful time!
So I arrived home around 11:00PM…
I noticed my Girls (sheep) that are on the dam intense rotational grazing acting odd. So I got the dogs on the Gator and headed down.
Well ODD is correct! They had torn the far end of the fence down and had formed a wall of sheep. About 100 feet behind their wall was my sub prime Ewe Moon. She was evidently bred by one of the young rental flock rams (they were suppose to have been all ewes, but 3 days before the May clinic as I trimmed feet I discovered there were TWO RAMS! Both black.
Well YES! Here she came up to the flock with a beautiful ram lamb beside her! All white!
So, I had to bring Ms Moon up to the barn along with her lamb! That meant carrying the lamb in my arms and convincing her to follow! She was not difficult and all went well.
Picture this : I have 5 grown English Shepherds on the gator and 1 puppy! ALL sat on the gator while I went to see about the sheep and then brought them up and past the gator all quite and nice. Moon and her lamb and I walked from the middle of the dam to the barn and if i had needed any help the dogs would have come if I had called on one. But I told them to stay and they did! I settled Moon and her lamb (a ram) in the barn and then walked back down. All my dogs were quite and still on the gator.
Mom and Baby are fine! They are nestled in the stall in straw and she is eating supper. Baby lamb is resting!
I cut his umbilical cord and doused it with Iodine.
I never cease to be amazed by birth!
I would bet Ms Moon has another surprise for me by morning!
Our second crop of lambs have started to arrive at Maple Grove Farm! Yes the Girls look interesting as well!!!
What a simply sweet baby lamb! It is talking to his Momma in the sweetest of voice! And she is sweet right back! The lamb is so soft and cuddly!
How sweet new life is !!!
