Today was “The Cow Sale Day”!!! Every Wednesday the Davadison County Livestock Barn in Lexington holds an Auction .
They sell ducks, chickens, turkeys, geese, and all kinds of birds… Plus rabbits…sheep, cows, goats, and such!
That sale starts at 8:00AM …When they finish they have a “Junk Sale”…consisting of whatever folk do not want to take home from the Flea Market held at the same location on Tuesdays. Plus whatever the farmers and folk drag in to sell. Sometimes there is fencing and T posts. (That is what I am looking for) Today they had fresh cut hay in square bales…But I had dressed to warm to stay long enough to see it sold! Flannel lined jeans and a turtle neck sweater…too hot for this day!
But I was able to purchase some items. Bolts nuts, washers and screws…all for a dollar! Plus and old wood plainer. But the surprise bargin and find of the day was…drum roll please…A really nice print of and old painting with a shepherd type dog sitting in front of the dairy cows and barn! It was sold in a box lot for Five Dollars…But inside the box was 2 milk bottles from Davidson County and 2 blue Ball Jars from the 1800’s with the original lids and a meat grinder in the original box complete with instructions and the red handle! Boy was I happy and surprised!
So this afternoon after Drover and I had put the sheep up…I took all my dogs…Montanna, Abilene, Amarillo, Drover, and BOO up on the mountain for a run and we took in the beauty of the setting sun from the top of the mountain! I enjoyed going through the old forrest (if only in my mind) on the way up and then visited with some old memories for a few minutes.
Grandpa was teaching me how to strech barbed wire. I could hear the hammer as he nailed steeples into the old trees, and he explained to me the importance of keeping the fence tight and up!
Ah, yes…simple country pleasures….
