This morning Ernie and I worked his dog Artie…(well Ernie worked Artie on the sheep and I watched!) It is really cool how Artie is starting to catch on and do such a good job! Ernie is working hard with him and doing a great job!
So afterwards I worked Montanna for a few minutes. She LOVES to work sheep. She is older and kinda slow , and the exercise is really good for her! Gets her heart rate up! Sometimes mine too!
Then Drover was worked a bit in the round pen. We practiced our downs, at any point as he brought the sheep round to me…. This is the beginning of teaching him to drive the sheep away from me. That is kinda hard for a dog that has a natural gather. What that means : Drover brings the sheep to me. So to take them away from me is not natural for him….Will see If I can get this !
So afterwards BOO and I took the sheep and put them in the field for the day. I got busy and forgot the sheep were out!
It was Dark Thirty and I realized I had not put the sheep up for the night. (Going to start putting them in the barn when it is rough like tonight) But first I have to clean out the barn!
I cranked the gator and it would not run and the rain had started along with the most wicked of winds! I drove the truck to the sheep pens and took Drover with me. We left the truck running with the lights on. I thought the sheep would be ready to come into the arena like normal. But the sheep had bedded down for the night behind the dam out of the wind! But I did not know where they were!
Drover and I started out (no flash light) only the lights of the truck to guide us!
Imagine this ! I just had all my hair cut off! As in really short! (too many colors and too much damage to do anything else) for it! So I had a toboggan, a neck scarf, 3 shirts, a coat and flannel pants along with an umbrella !!! I am surprised I did not scare Drover! Across the 10 acres we went in the dark! No sheep! Finally Drover went ahead and found them… waited for me to tell him what to do and I gave him an “Away” command and he brought the sheep to me and I walked back down to the arena with Drover behind the sheep… easy as pie!!!!
What a good right hand dog Drover is turning into!
(please note that my spell check is NOT working! so any miss spellings are not my doing!) Sorry!
