Sunday afternoon Les and I jumped into the pickup truck and headed for Denton…To the Country Store and some hand dipped delicious ice cream. (Now I do not normally do this) Ice cream in so many ways is not my friend… especially to my waist!
Les got a Banana Split and he got to pick his Banana! I had White Cherry! It was delicious!
On the way in I spotted “Parched Peanuts” in small paper bags! WOW! It hit me like a rock! The memories came flooding into my mind and heart!
Grandma and Pap LOVED parched peanuts! I would buy them a bag of peanuts and she would parch them in the stove. Then Pap would sit beside the fire on cold evenings and eat them. I can see him in my mind. Overalls on… and peanuts in his hands enjoying that simple pleasure. He would throw the hulls in the black pot beside the wood stove. All was well … We were warm by a good wood fire that smelled heavenly…and peanuts to eat along with good conversation before bed.:)
So of course I had to have a dollar bag of parched peanuts! Les and I sat on the old wooden bench on the porch at the Country store ate our ice cream and I the peanuts as well. I smiled as I remembered my Grandpa and Grandma! What wonderful special people they were and how very very BLESSED I was to have them as my Grandma and Grandpa! (Yeah I called Grandpa… Pap too)
Something I may not have mentioned…My Grandpa helped my Grandma prepare the Wedding Rehearsal Dinner for our wedding! (I never knew my Grandpa to help in the kitchen … But for Les and I he did!!) It was their Special Gift to Les and I ! Plus they wittiness our marriage certificate! (I figured they were the best choices! They had been married for so long!:) 50 years plus! My word! All the things they taught me…
Like…What a simple country pleasure eating parched peanuts could be ! and MY what beautiful memories they brought back to me. Sigh…
