Boobie Dog and Ruff…the two by which all others are considered.
Ruff was the first and lived a long happy 15 and 1/2 years…….
Boobie Dog was born on the day Ruff passed, and lived to be 10 years of age lacking 3 days. He had a wonderful happy life and both dogs were are still so loved and in my heart and we miss them both so much.
I hear folks say, “oh, I could never have another dog (pet),” and I say how could one not? Why would we deprive ourselves of such love and companionship and fun???? They do not replace the other but add to the love and wonder of living life with these wonderful dogs called English Shepherds. Kay
Boobie Dog’s first trip
Finally he was old enough to go trail riding away from home he was 5 months old. We took him to our favorite place mount rogers in Virginia. It is high country complete with open balds and 5400 feet above sea level. 200 miles of horse trails not to mention dirt roads etc. Horse back riding heaven.
July, 1998, hot even for the mountains. We stopped at the scales and had lunch and had been riding for 4 hours. Boobie Dog was tired and thirsty. I fed him his lunch on the rock he is laying on and then his water in the hollow of the rock. We rested for over an hour and he was fast asleep soon as he finished his water.
Well we remounted and prepared to hit the trail and Boobie was so asleep that he did not hear me calling him I had to get off my horse and wake him by shaking him.
He was always the best trail dog . We have so many wonderful memories of him. He was so good at trail riding and anything else he did.
I am often asked how did he get the name “Boobie Dog” ? ………………….
Les has a daughter, and when she was little she called dogs “boobies,” so we tried calling him Ruffers but it hurt too much, so Les started calling him Boobie and I added “Dog” ’cause you can imagine the looks we got…and it fit… I never thought twice about his name ,but trust me, no other dog will carry that name for me.
GOOD-BYE, MY FRIEND
My Boobie Dog (real name Maplegrovefarm’s Ruffers) was born March 1st 1998 at 12:00 AM to Reba Stegall”s Sadie Mae and Stegall’s Rebel Jr. He was out of a litter of 11 . He was black, white, and tan and had a wavy coat. I saw him at 2 days of age and went back at one week and then purchased him and took him home with us at 5 weeks of age. He looked like a rat to me. Long and wavy hair , black with a white collar and white feet and one half of his tail was white. What a wonderful friend and companion he turned out to be. BEAUTIFUL and SMART and GOOD. His soul was the sweetest I have ever known, I loved him and he returned that love. He was my best trail dog and loved to go. He went many places with us and I was rarely without him. Unfortunately he passed away on February 26th 2008, from pancreas failure and diabetes. He died in my arms on the porch and his passing was easy. The Lord sent an Angel for him and took him home . In answer to my prayers . I saw the Light. I will miss this good dog as long as I live. The pain is very strong now and I know it will ease, but my, what a fine dog he was! What an empty space in my heart and Les’. My brother Kenneth buried him that night for me with his backhoe. I put his bandanna on him and his squeaky toy under his chin. He is beside my round pen under the big Popular tree next to the Corn Crib. GOODBYE MY GOOD FRIEND. WE WILL MEET AGAIN. KAY
