When I Was A Girl…

I sat under the maple tree or at the dinner table as my Grandpa Delk told me stories of his childhood and it was important to him that I remember them!

Today as we took a trail ride through some unfamiliar areas we came upon an old road bed in the woods behind Piney Grove Methodist Church.  Grandpa and I had looked for it many times with no success…and as the sun shone brightly thru the trees I saw it! Part of the trail we were on was on it! I knew it existed, but had been unable to locate it…

This was the wagon road my Grandpa and his Mama and family took to church! The stories my Grandpa told of the beautiful Pound Cakes she made and other wonderful things carried to church via wagon and in a wagon box securely put under the seat!  I have that very box!  and yes I make good pound cakes!

This was such a wonder for me to find the old road I had chills and tears I know and recognized what it was right there! history ! MY history…

I am fairly sure I could hear children laughing and playing on their way to church…and My great grand parents chatting and happily driving along to church with lunch packed safely away …until time!

My heart leapt and my soul was/ is speechless !

Thank you Grandpa for all the stories and time you gave to me! Today it all lives!
