It is 4:30 AM the wind is blowing it is cold and wet. Not raining though it has been all day.
Earlier I had checked on my flock before I headed to bed…They were all bedded down in the field and one looked different. She was laying on her side and kinda stretched out unnatural like.
I have been in the field with her since 1:00 AM… trying to figure out what to do for her. She had clearly given up. While some of the ewes looked on in concern…I poked prodded and tried to help her up. She had no will. I brought Journey in with me to entice her to move on her own . That perked her up a bit but she had no strength or if she did she was not using it. (Sheep are known for laying down and just going on) We have buried one old ewe last week and I have no intention of loosing this one!
I prayed!
I worked with her she seemed to have gas and she was going into shock. Journey gave up his nice wool blanket and comforter we have her covered good I think.
Meantime I gave her medicine for gas, a shot of antibiotics…and rubbed her good she seemed to like that.
I came to the house knowing I have done all I can to help her with my knowledge…She is old 11 and is heavy with lambs…But is not dilated and I did not feel any presentation of the lambs. They seem to be well up in her tummy and not ready to come into this world.
I prayed.
She is not on her side and is not shivering or in shock. Hopefully she was just wet from the rain and felt bad…and with all the doctoring will be up and well by sun up!
There comes a time when you have done all you can and it is up the the Good Lord to see to the problem.
I sure do not want to loose this old ewe “Belle” … I love everyone of my sheep…Especially my old girls…
I am praying all will be well.
I am a Shepherd.
