Possum Hunting!

I was up late working on photos  on my computer. So when I finally finished I was sleepy and ready for bed!

Abilene and Amarillo are out of heat and loose. I had them on the porch and settled in I thought.Timber was in her crate and Montanna was on the porch as well. Drover sleeps beside my bed.

I heard them shortly after I laid down. But thought as I fell to sleep ” they will quit that barking”. Sometime round 5:30 AM they woke me. (I suppose I got my nap in so I could go hunting) They were having a fit about 100 feet up in the woods . From the bark I knew they had something treed …Fleetingly I thought  I hope it is not a Bob Cat or worse!!!  I was still to sleepy to be smart enough to care!

I got the rifle (I had just loaded it the day before) and my tennis shoes, jacket (it is cool that time of morning) and my flash light and knife)  Abilene sounded like she was hung in something!

What thankful dogs I found! They had a possum treed up a small knotty tree. He was a huge Possum and was wanting down. He knew if he went down it was certain death he was no match for the 2 really mad English Shepherds at the bottom of that tree and they were not leaving!

Flash light in hand and with good aim one shot from the 22 rifle and it was over with! They had their prize and I could finally sleep in peace.

I have said here many times that Possums carry devastating diseases (EPM) for horses , as do Racoons. We do not want these animals living in our yard or barns, while I do not go look for them (hunt) if the dogs tree one that close to my barn and home we do take care of them.

The interesting part of this story for me….Is how good Abilene and Amarillo are at treeing and keeping something treed…Abilene sits and points and if you look where she is pointing you can aim and know you will hit what ever it is without a doubt.

Now I am awake…I am sure glad they had not treed a big cat!  With my rifle jamming 3 times before I could shoot that might have been dicey!   🙂

All  is well…                                                              AMARILLO15501668                                                                                    ABILENE
